When should you take probiotics to get the best results?

Must read

Do you ever wonder if your probiotics are taken at the right time? You might be surprised by the answer, and it could make a huge difference to your gut health.

Probiotics are microorganisms which support digestion and immunity. When is the best time to take probiotics? Experts say there is no one-size fits all answer. Seifeldin hakim, MD, gastroenterologist with Memorial Hermann Health System, says that there is no solid evidence about timing. Check the label to see if your probiotic should be taken on an empty stomach or with meals.

Patricia Raymond, MD is a gastroenterology physician and an internal medicine specialist. She recommends taking probiotics before going to bed. She says that the gut is inactive at night. This means that taking a probiotic right before bed will increase the chances of it staying in your system.

How often should you take these supplements? Mia Syn, RDN is a dietitian, author of Mostly Plant Based and a probiotics advocate. She recommends taking them every day. “Like other dietary supplements, probiotics are best taken daily for maximum benefits, including digestive support and immune support,” she explains.

It’s important to give probiotics enough time to work. Tina Marinaccio RD, a Dietitian at Health Dynamics LLC says that it can take weeks, or even months, to see results. She says that if you have taken an antibiotic and experienced gastrointestinal distress, it may take up to two months to normalize your GI tract.

Are you ready to optimize your probiotic regimen? Your stomach will thank you.
