Remember the darkly romantic Victorian house from Practical magic? Remember the Victorian manor with its dark wood, velvet fabrics, Persian rugs and ornate chandeliers? This is the essence of whimsigoth, a style that has gained popularity among design enthusiasts.
Evan Collins coined “whimsigothic”, a term that describes this mystical, moody style in 2020. It combines dark and edgy items with magical, ethereal pieces. Designer Charlsie Hethershaw says it is a nod to the ’90s, with Stevie Nicks and Lisa Bonet.
Why is whimsigoth so popular now? Aino Heinasuo is the head of design at Redecor. He sees it as a reimagining gothic décor but with warmth and playfullness. It’s dark academia without all the books. She says that it brings a childlike wonder to a gothic setting. It’s nostalgic for those who grew-up in the 1990s and early 2000s. Hethershaw says, “It’s like a nostalgic nod to the past.” “People say that decorating in this style heals the inner child, or lets them do what they wanted to as children.”
Want to channel the enchanting trend? Here’s how:

- Embrace Maximalism: Fill up your space with vintage trinkets and natural elements. It’s softer and more magical than traditional goth.
Use jewel tones or metallics: Think navy blue, burgundy purple, and emerald. Balance with magenta or burnt orange. - Luxe patterns and textures: Velvet, lace and brocade create an enchanting vibe. Layer fabrics, such as a velvet couch with a vintage carpet and mix patterns.
- Celestial Accents: Include stars, moons and mythical creatures in wall art and decor. Try a Tiffany Lamp or gold foil stars in a deep blue ceiling.
- Lighting is important: Use warm, low-lighting with vintage fixtures, swag chandeliers, or pendants. Candles and candelabras create drama.
You don’t have to be a witch to embrace whimsigoth. It’s all about creating a space which is darkly romantic, yet warm and playful – a perfect contrast to serious goth style.
